- Most common species found in Colorado: The Black Locust and Honey Locust are the two most popular locust tree species in the Denver metro area.
- Leaf shape and color: Black Locust tree leaves tend to be fairly small (no more than 3-4”) and oval-shaped in appearance. The two-seed legume (‘helicopter’) leaves are the most iconic sign of locust trees.
- Bark texture: The Black Locust tree bark is a dark-gray color with a rope-like intertwined pattern. Honey locust tree have a lighter bark color that’s still medium-brown-gray in color.
Most common diseases and pests:
Thyronectria canker, also known as Honeylocust disease, creates bubble-like growth on locust trees. When the disease gets down into the main root, it can choke out growth and kill the tree. The most common pests for locust trees are plant bugs, which are typically a dull green color.
